How To Save on Gas Without Changing Your Driving Habits

There are a number of methods you can use to reduce your overall expense of Ffuel purchases even before you consider changing your driving habits or taking any actions on your car. These strategies consist of smart buying and good management of your gasoline purchases.

One of the easiest and most basic methods is smart shopping for gas. If you were buying a camera you would shop around for the store with the lowest price. For some reason most of us were trained to treat gasoline differently. You probably buy gas where it is convenient regardless of price. That is what you need to change.

As with any other commodity you want to save money on, shop around for the lowest price. Of course if you waste 10 gallons of fuel driving around to find the lowest price it defeats the purpose of finding the lowest price. The trick is to do the shopping without wasting gas doing it.

You can try to shop around in your local area for the cheapest fuel but you shouldn’t go too far out of your way. The minute you start driving around looking for good gas prices you start burning gas which adds to your gas expense. Since your goal is to save money you would be defeating the purpose by driving around for too long.

Studies done by the AAA indicate that it costs on average approximately 51.7 cents per mile to operate your car. So every two miles you drive to find a better price could be costing you $1.00.

That means that if you have a 15 gallon fuel tank that you would fill completely, you would have to beat the neighborhood station by about 7 cents. For every two miles you drive beyond that you would have to save another 7 cents. You can see after only a short distance any savings would be nullified.

The smart way to shop around is to find the low price stations during your normal daily driving. By doing that you will not be using any extra fuel. Keep a small notebook in your car. As you see stations that have low prices note the location in your notebook.

Later, after reviewing the information you have collected in your notebook, you can plan to stop at the station that has been noted by you to have the lowest prices. Then you can fill up at a location that you would normally be driving near in the course of your daily routine. That way you are not using any extra gasoline to find your bargain. The net result is spending less on gas!

Top Three Tips for Cultivating an Eager Reader

27 Feb.
Posted by clarkcj2 in Consumer | Comments Off

I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to get kids excited about reading. I wasn’t an eager reader when I was a child, and I wanted to offer my students, and my own children, the reading encouragement that I once needed. After getting my master’s degree in reading education I felt like I had a new level of preparedness for supplying this encouragement. I discovered some excellent tips for helping children become eager readers. I’d like to share three of my favorites.

The necessity of reading with a young reader is pretty obvious for most. How to get a child excited about his reading time is another matter. Building eagerness to read is a challenge that can be met with a little time, consideration and investment.

One way I’ve gotten children excited about reading is through the careful selection of reading material. Supplying the right variety, and lots of it, is paramount when you’re working to get kids excited to read. Carefully consider your audience and its enthusiasms. Sport lovers get juiced when they can read about soccer, baseball and football too. The proper variety is important. Reading material about sports is available in fiction and non fiction as well as in magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and comic books. Consider creating a library that includes all of these options. Select some books about more unique sports like figure skating for boys, girls wrestling, snowboarding and table tennis. Think outside of the box. Include empty cereal boxes with sport themes in your repertoire. Even the most reticent young readers will work to decipher the back of an appealing cereal box!

Remember that not all kids want to read about sports. Some will get excited about fashion and will spend hours reading a catalogue. Children who like to cook will enjoy a library of recipes they can choose from. Some kids love to collect information inside encyclopedias, world books and books about world records. Mysteries are a favorite among many boys and girls. Mystery books series are great for these children. Word searches, crossword puzzles and books with problems to solve are great for kids who like to look for answers. Get imaginative and you’ll find that you’ll spark many imaginations. Create a library full of a wide variety of reading material. Expect kids to be excited about reading.

Variety is important, but there’s another valuable consideration when selecting reading material: reading level. If a child can’t read four words, or more, on a given page they need to be highly motivated to persevere. The goal is to provide the most interesting books that provide the ideal challenge. This means finding high interest level books that are not too easy and not too hard. If you’re not sure how to pick books at the right reading level you’re not alone. Many people are intimidated by the challenge to find reading material that is right for a child’s needs. Luckily, this is a simple challenge to overcome! Teachers, child librarians and home schooling moms are loaded with knowledge and experience in this area. You’ll also find that they’re very willing to help you out. You need to know how to find the right books for a child. Be brave enough to ask for help. You’ll be surprised by how eager people are to give you a hand.

My last tip for helping a child develop an eagerness for reading is my personal favorite: create a cozy reading environment. The corner of a room can be transformed into a reading nook with some throw pillows and a fuzzy blanket. Quiet classical music can be played during special reading times. A child sized rocking chair can gently rock a happy child as they enjoy a book or magazine. A special reading lamp or a big, poofy saucer chair can set just the right mood for enthusiastic reading. Environment matters. Set the stage for eager reading and you’ll be surprised by the results you reap. Even the most reluctant reader will open a book if they are properly enticed.

I’ve taken some time to share ways to build reading eagerness. I’ve shared because I believe reading success prepares a child for academic success, life success and a lifetime of reading enjoyment. I’ve also shared because I believe facilitating reading success makes a huge difference in the life of a child. Trust that the time and energy you invest in cultivating an eager reader is worth it. The benefits that are reaped will last a child’s lifetime.

How to Get a Reluctant Reader to Love Reading

27 Feb.

I’ve worked with a lot of reluctant readers in my reading teacher role. The challenge of working with a reluctant reader was often twofold: developing enthusiasm for reading and building the reader’s confidence. Both challenges required careful attention if they were to be met. I had success through the consideration of a few important points I’d like to share.

I began the challenge of developing a reluctant reader’s enthusiasm for reading with selecting the right reading material. I learned that subject matter should come first. I figured out what got a reader excited. I looked at sport, animal, joke and mystery books. I looked for the book that would be the hook that got reluctant eyes to gaze upon a page. Once I got my reader’s attention I made good progress in the battle to build enthusiasm.

I also learned that once you have your reader’s attention, you want to ensure success. I learned that this is the place where a child’s confidence is cultivated. I took care to select books that were the appropriate reading level. I reviewed difficult vocabulary words before we dug in to the first chapter. I provided a good summary of the book’s plot and introduced any important concepts. Sometimes this meant giving a short phonics lesson to introduce the “sh” sound or a discussion about early colonial America. I thought about what was needed to get the reader off to a good start in a new book.

Experience showed me that a frustrated or beginning reader needed a lot of support. This meant spending time reading alongside them. I recommend that parents set aside 20 minutes a day to read with a child who is reluctant. I suggest they use this time to give the reader the support and encouragement they need. I believe this time investment has great payoffs. You’ll likely be excited by how quickly your reader becomes more interested in books when you take the time to read with them.

I always tell parents, “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Your child’s teacher knows which books are at the right reading level for your child. Many schools have a reading specialist, or resource room teachers, who have deep knowledge of the best ways to build reading enthusiasm and reader confidence. Child librarians often know what books are hot for a particular age group, and they are generally familiar with what books are available within a certain subject area. If you are unsure about how to best utilize 20 minutes with a reluctant reader, it is a good idea to find some good resource people to assist you. You’ll be surprised by how happy teachers, school and library staff are when they are asked about what can be done to help a child.

I encourage parents to visit an educational supply store to look at reading programs that might guide them. There are great book sets that use phonics, sight word and whole language based approaches. You can select a set that fits the needs of your reader. You’ll find books, worksheets and lesson plans that provide straight forward materials that are perfect for your needs. You won’t regret the confidence your reader finds when they have the opportunity to read what’s just right for them. An educational supplier can help you get your hands on what you need.

My last, and favorite, suggestion for encouraging the reluctant reader has been time tested in my own classroom and my own home: provide a cozy, comfortable spot full of books. It’s a fantastic way to encourage a child to open a book. Children love to associate reading with comfort. My kids have a cozy spot. Even my three year old will use it. It has a big basket full of carefully selected books, a saucer chair and a child recliner with a kid sized foot rest. A few fleece blankets are handy for cuddling up in. I play soft music during special reading times. All three of my children love their cozy reading spot. It’s my best encouragement for my growing readers.

The challenge of working with a reluctant reader deserves careful attention. Reading is an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience much enjoyment. It’s an opportunity that the reluctant reader misses out on. Consider helping a child to love reading. You will have given them a gift that lasts a lifetime. You won’t regret the investment.

Bogus Fuel Pill Schemes To Rip You Off!

25 Feb.
Posted by hssiegel in Consumer | Comments Off

Have you seen lots of ads for pills that you add to your gas tank and magically you will get 10, 20 and even 30% better fuel economy? There was a product made by Bioperformance. These pills were known as fuel pills or gas pills.

The Attorney General of Texas filed an action against Bioperformance. He stated “We will aggressively fight these con artists who cynically exploit the public’s concerns about high gas prices to line their own pockets.

He labeled them exactly what they are, con artists. It turns out, in fact, the fuel pill is basically the chemical equivalent of mothballs, which are toxic.

The attorney general went on to say that Bioperformance was merely a smokescreen to trigger the recruitment of more and more paying members into what appears to be an illegal pyramid scheme. A total scam.

There are still companies and products out there that are working the same scam. MPG-Cap is one. Another one is Enviro-Max. They work on the same premise as Bioperformance. they claim you will get significant increases in fuel economy by dropping their pills into your gas tank.

Most of their testing and claims are based on testimonials from drivers. There is no way that a driver without sophisticated and expensive equipment can effectively measure the miles per gallon differences from an additive.

The normal driving conditions of weather, traffic volume and stop light patterns have a tremendous impact on any days fuel economy. There is no way for the average driver to take those factors into consideration to be able to run a believable test.

Enviromax Plus claims that it makes gasoline burn more efficiently. It claims it will lower the unburned gas in your engine from 15 percent down to 1 to 2 percent. Unfortunately for Enviromax but fortunately for you, todays current engines actually burn gas with an efficiency of about 98 to 99 percent. That is without any help from EnviroMax.

Many of these companies claim that they have been tested at an EPA lab. First of all, those labs performing the tests are not connected with the EPA in any way. The EPA does not endorse any product. Second, those tests are generally performed on one car. That car is usually 15 to 20 years old. If you have the same model car they used in the test and your car is 20 years old, then maybe you will see a benefit. If you have a car built in the last 10 years, forget about it.

One other claim they make is that they are registered with the EPA. That is correct. That means nothing. If you want to sell anything that is added to a car which could affect the air quality, it has to be registered with the EPA. All that means is they filled out a form and sent it in. If you wanted to sell bottled water as a fuel additive, you would just fill out the forms and your bottled water additive would be “registered” with the EPA.

They want you to believe that being registered with the EPA means they are endorsed by the EPA. That is absolutely not true. Any attempt to convince you otherwise is just more mis-truths and deceptive tactics.

The bottom line, save your money. Don’t believe the wild claims of these modern day snake oil salesmen. As always if it seems to good to be true, it is!
