Is It Essential To Learn French

28 Jun.
Posted by captinmike in Language | No Comments

French is spoken in more countries than you might think. There are over thirty countries that speak French as their official language. With so many countries speaking the French language, Is it essential to learn to speak French.

With the English language becoming more and more dominant as the preferred language or maybe I should say, the preferred second language in non-English speaking countries. The reasons to speak another language maybe becoming blurred.

Why would you want to learn to speak French when most French people speak English? Well I am not sure that most French people do speak English. Okay they might know a few words, just like English-speaking people know a few words of French but that’s no surprise really, because French and English is taught in every country in the world.

Give me a reason to learn French

I’ll give you three reasons you should learn to speak French. Firstly something that’s seems to be in short supply in the world today, respect. If someone comes to your country and doesn’t speak your language, is it your duty to speak their language, no, but English people expect it, I’ve done it myself (shame on me).

Secondly, if you intend living in a French speaking country then you really have no choice. Think about your every day life now, the people you need to speak to just to get through one day.

Thirdly, if you intend working in a French speaking country then you are definitely going to be dealing with French people and not knowing the language would be a definite hindrance to your work and probably your sanity.

Make the effort and help yourself

Obviously, I am using French as an example. I could just as easily be talking about Spanish and Chinese, which are more widely spoken than English or French. French however is a good staring point. If you have kids at school, they are probably learning French and if you make the effort to learn French with them, it can open up a new world for you and your family, especially if you want to visit France for a holiday. You can now go further inland and speak French to the natives.

Learn with a family member or friend

It’s always going to be easier to learn to speak any language with somebody that has the same goal as you. In fact, the more people you can get involved in this learning process the higher chance of success. Two or more people that learn a new talent tend to feed of each other and its more fun.

So if you want to learn to speak French then get stuck in and get it done.

It’s always easier to say you can’t do something than to say you can.

The Advantages of Learning Spanish as a Second Language

23 Jun.
Posted by WMMedia in Language | No Comments

Without question, if you’re interested in learning a second language, Spanish is one of your best options. Whether you’re looking to meet high school language proficiency requirements or simply want to round out your education, Spanish is one of the most useful languages you can learn. You may even find that learning Spanish will help you in other areas of your education.

Similarity to Other Languages

Spanish is one of several European languages based on Latin - called the Romance languages. As a result, when you learn Spanish, you’ll have a beginner’s key to a number of other languages, including French and Italian. Because many words in Spanish are based on Latin roots, you may find that learning Spanish will help you understand medical and scientific terms.

In fact, many people consider Spanish the easiest of the Romance languages because it lacks the complex pronunciations found in French, while still retaining a structure and root word usage that’s compatible with other languages. You’ll also find that the Spanish language has a natural rhythm that makes it comfortable to speak and write. In some cases, you may even find that Spanish is easier to learn than your native language!

Spoken All Over the World

Historically speaking, conquerors and missionaries from Spain and Portugal were primarily responsible for the spread of the Spanish language throughout the American continents. Today, Spanish is spoken all over Europe, as well as in Mexico and many countries in South America. That said, it’s important to realize that people in specific geographic regions speak in dialects that may be very different from what you initially learned. However, the basic elements of European dialects are similar enough that you’ll be able to interpret these different patterns with ease.

Easy and Convenient to Learn

Considering that Spanish is spoken by over 300 million people around the world, it should come as no surprise that locating classes and tutorials is fairly easy. If you’re a high school student, you probably have the option to elect Spanish studies for free. Many colleges also offer full credit classes for students, as well as non-credit versions for community members. There are also hundreds of tapes, videos, books, and dictionaries designed to help you learn Spanish on your own. You can also take advantage of the internet to find websites, chat rooms, and other resources that are developed exclusively in Spanish.

When you’re thinking about learning a second language, it’s important to consider the benefits of all your different options. Unfortunately, if you choose a less commonly known language like Latin, you won’t have many opportunities to practice with others or to directly use your knowledge. Learning Spanish will give you this kind of linguistic grounding. At the same time, you’ll gain the ability to converse with millions of people that may or may not speak your native language. In addition, if you don’t already speak English or another Romance language, Spanish offers you a key foundation to learning them.

Free Learning and Practicing Verbal Spanish

21 Jun.
Posted by WMMedia in Language | No Comments

As you begin to learn to speak Spanish, you’ll soon recognize a common rhythm to each word and sentence. Whether or not you can duplicate this cadence, you should at least be able to say each word with an appropriate accent. As you might expect, the only way that you’ll develop these skills is to practice speaking Spanish as much as possible. Fortunately, there are a number of places where you can practice your verbal Spanish skills.

Call Center Conversations

Chances are, whenever you call a government agency or large businesses, you’ll be given an option to speak to someone in Spanish. If you need to resolve an issue through one of these call centers, you may want to try requesting a Spanish speaking representative. Even if you can’t resolve your issue this way and need to ask for an English speaking person, you’ll still have had the chance to try out your skills in a real time situation.

Online Verbal Chatting

The internet is filled with voice chat services like Skype that can help you connect with others that speak Spanish. If you sign up for online classes, you may even be able to chat with other students who are also working with the same types of material. You can search for student chat groups online or get contact information from online Spanish study groups. Online verbal chatting is especially useful if you know one dialect of Spanish and want to gain some experience with the language as it is spoken in other regions.

Tape and Video Recordings

Because Spanish is such a popular language, there are dozens of tapes that will help you learn how to pronounce Spanish words and phrases properly. Typically, you’ll have an opportunity to listen to the pronunciation of words and phrases, before repeating them back. If you use a tape recorder during each exercise, you’ll be able to go back and listen to see if you were successful in duplicating each verbal pattern. If you record both the original version and your attempts together, it will make it much easier to listen for differences.

Visit Spanish Speaking Neighborhoods

Depending on where you live, you may be able to find store clerks and neighbors that speak Spanish as a primary language. If you visit with these people, they may be willing to converse with you in their native language. This can be a fun and rewarding experience, as well as one that helps you build your speaking skills. Finally, if you have the opportunity to visit a Spanish speaking country for a few months, you’ll find that you learn much more quickly through the immersion method.

When you’re learning to speak Spanish, you’ll need to take some time to learn verbal aspects of the language in addition to reading and writing. Aside from understanding the basic grammar and vocabulary, it’s also important to capture the rhythm of the language. Once you get used to it, you may even find that you enjoy the more fluid sounds of the Spanish language as compared to English.

Tips To Learn Language Skills To Perfection

19 Jun.
Posted by nbisea in Language | No Comments

In order to learn language skills that are foreign to you, it is going to take a lot of perseverance and hard work. People have a hard time learning new languages as they get older. However, there are many different options to help someone who is determined to learn another patois.

Books, tapes and DVDs are plentiful with language learning courses, and these can be great learning aids. For someone who is internet savvy, there are many online classes that can be taken on how to learn French or any other dialect.

The convenience of being able to learn in this way can be very helpful for the right person. For true fluency in any language though, you will have to interact with native speakers.

Though this scenario sounds quite depressing, you should not lose hope. To learn language skills to perfection you need to do one more thing besides learning new words and grammar; that magic ingredient is “practice.”

Have you wondered why children catch on to foreign languages in absolutely no time at all? It is because they plunge into the language and speak whatever they know, whenever they can, without being self-conscious of mistakes or wrong accent inflections.

Practice is actually a very powerful tool in your arsenal if you want to learn a foreign language thoroughly. As well, since it is natural to think in their mother tongue, for example English, many people have to mentally translate what they want to say into the language they are learning, only to blotch the dialogue completely. However, at some point in the French learning experience, most will start to think in French and will not be burdened with the necessity to consciously translate from English to French before speaking.

In order to find out if you are truly fluent in a language you are going to need to get out there and start talking to some native speakers. It is said that the true test of fluency in a language is when you are finally able to think in that language.

The only way that you are going to learn language skills properly, and get to that level, is to practice each and every day. Finding people who are fluent in the language you are learning is essential. If you have the opportunity to speak only that language with others, then your chances of truly mastering the lingo will increase exponentially.

Once you find yourself a native speaker who is willing to work with you to help to learn language skills that will make you fluent in their language, then you are home free. You need to totally immerse yourself in the language to the point where you are thinking in that language.

This can help you when you want to learn French or any other language. If French is the foreign language that you have chose to learn, then don’t forget to work on perfecting your French grammar and increasing your French vocabulary too.

Learning to Read and Write in Spanish

18 Jun.
Posted by WMMedia in Language | No Comments

As you might expect, when you’re learning Spanish it’s important to learn how to both read and write in the language. Consequently, when you’re choosing how to go about studying the language, be sure that your study method involves both of these components. If you begin your studies with home study courses, be sure it includes tapes that demonstrate how to pronounce the words correctly. If you choose an online course, remember to practice writing the language by hand.

Vocabulary and Grammar

Just like any other language, you’ll need to develop your Spanish vocabulary and grammar skills. Fortunately - with few exceptions - the Spanish language uses the same alphabet as English. However, even though both English and Spanish are derived from Latin roots, the vocabulary and phrases found in each language can be fairly different. While there are some analogous terms, you’ll find you need to learn a whole new set of words for most instances.

You’ll also find that the grammar rules of Spanish are very different. Among other things, when you use verbs in a sentence, they’re conjugated based on the subject of the sentence, as well as when the events communicated in sentence occurred. And even though the verb suffixes are very predictable, it can be difficult to determine which one to use in which situation. However, if you’re planning to spend a lot of time in a Spanish-speaking area, it’s to your advantage to focus on these terms.

Practice Online

When you’re learning to read in Spanish, you can use a wide array of online resources. You can find newspapers, chat rooms, and even entire books written in Spanish. If you’re interested in a particular region, you can even subscribe to media content from those specific areas. This will give you a better idea about the culture of each region and help you to read Spanish with more proficiency.

You can also join a number of online groups where individuals speak only Spanish. This will give you a tremendous opportunity to see how Spanish is used in conversations, as well as learn the local flavor of specific dialects. Without a question, conventional language aids can teach you the main points of a language, but they won’t be able to teach you the nuances of someone that speaks fluently like these resources.

Keep a Journal

Over the years, journals have proven indispensable for learning new languages. Journals give you the freedom to express yourself in your new language and experiment with different thoguhts and ideas. Because your journal is private, you’ll be able to relax as you write, which will help you feel more comfortable reading and writing in Spanish.

When you begin learning Spanish, you’ll quickly come to appreciate the consistent grammatical structure of the language. Aside from making it very easy to identify verbs, it often makes it easier for you to convey a number of different meanings with fewer words than you need in English. However, you’ll still need to learn a sizeable amount of vocabulary and learn how words fit together in sentences. It’s also important to practice your writing and comprehension skills as much as possible in order to develop the level of Spanish fluency you desire.

For example, some instructors may offer special classes on business Spanish and other important communication areas. Depending on your interests and goals, you may also want to sign up for credit courses in Spanish. While they may cost more, the depth of proficiency in these classes far exceeds community-level courses.

Home Study Courses

Many people that speak Spanish are willing to tutor students via home study guides and other offerings. In many cases, you’ll find that home study courses cost less than ones you take at a college. You’ll also have an opportunity to study at your own pace and choose the supplemental materials that will be most helpful for you. Chances are, you can also find individuals in your community that will be willing to tutor you in person. Working one-on-one with a Spanish tutor is a great way to be sure that your pronunciation is as accurate as possible.

Online Courses

As you might expect, there are many different online resources for learning Spanish available as well. Just like a traditional college, you can attend an online university for credit or non-credit courses. In addition, you’ll be able to contract with tutors from all over the world. This can be especially helpful if you’re planning to visit a specific country and want to be comfortable with the local dialects before you arrive. In some cases, you may even be able to sign on to newsgroups or forums for specific communities and get to know some residents before you visit.

Aside from being one of the most structurally simple languages used today, learning Spanish is easy because of the availability of educational materials. You’ll also have a number of opportunities to practice Spanish and keep improving your skills once you know the basics. Even if you have a limited budget, you can try taking online classes or ask someone in your local community to tutor you.
