    Q:

    How is mesothelioma treated?

A: For those who are diagnosed with mesothelioma, getting treatment is much more important than filing a mesothelioma claim. Please make sure that your or your loved one is getting proper treatment before you worry about mesothelioma lawsuits.

Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy

Mesothelioma treatmentThe most common treatment option for mesothelioma, chemotherapy can be administered through a pill, injection or intravenously. Chemotherapy uses a drug or a combination of drugs to kill cancer cells. The drug can be administered systemically (through the blood stream) or directly into an area such as the pleural cavity. There are new chemotherapy advances as researchers continue to attempt to find successful treatment protocols and uncover new cancer information for mesothelioma. In a recent clinical trial study, researchers reported that mesothelioma patients on a new chemotherapy drug regimen lived longer and had less pain. The results show that tumors shrank in 41% of patients on pemetrexed (brand name Alimta ™) in combination with cisplatin, another form of chemotherapy. According to the study, only 17% of patients receiving cisplatin alone experienced tumor shrinkage and those on the pemetrexed combination, on average, lived almost 3 months longer. Radiation therapy kills cancer cells or shrinks tumors with high-energy x-rays. Radiation therapy can damage healthy tissue in the process of treating cancer. Research is now examining ways of delivering radiation directly to the tumor. In radiation therapy, a machine may be used to emit radiation, or radioisotopes (materials that produce radiation) may be administered through plastic tubes in the part of the body where the cancer cells are found.

    Q:

    Are there other mesothelioma treatments?

A: Surgery

In some cases, surgery for a patient with mesothelioma may extend and improve the quality of life. However, such surgery is serious and complicated. Consultation with a specialist is always best if considering this treatment option. One type of surgery, called a pleurectomy or decortication, involves opening the chest and removing the tumor from the lung. This procedure relieves chest pain and prevents the recurrence of effusions (the escape of fluid) in the pleura. Another type of surgery, extra pleural pneumonectomy, involves the removal of the lung, the diaphragm, or the lining of the heart. Gortex, a synthetic fabric, replaces the heart lining or diaphragm. After surgery, the patient undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to destroy any remaining cancer cells. A pneumonectomy involves the removal of a lung. This procedure generally occurs during a late stage of mesothelioma.

Thoracentesis or Paracentesis

Thoracentesis removes fluid from the lung lining, or pleura. The fluid that accumulates as part of mesothelioma can cause discomfort or shortness of breath. Once fluid is drained from the pleura, a form of talcum powder or other material may be applied that causes the lung to adhere to the chest wall. Paracentesis is a similar procedure to remove fluid from the abdominal cavity. If there is a chronic problem with fluid buildup, a catheter can be inserted to drain fluid on an as needed basis. Fluid removal can alleviate difficulty with breathing and chest pain. Consultation with a specialist is always best before pursuing thoracentesis or paracentesis. What You Need To Know About Brain Cancer

28 Jun.
Posted by rhysbern in Cancer | Comments Off

Malignant brain tumors occur in about 4.5 people per 100,000 population, they may occur at any age but brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in patients younger than age 35. In adults, incidence is generally highest between ages 40 to 60.
There are two main types of brain cancer. Primary brain cancer starts in the brain. Metastatic brain cancer starts somewhere else in the body and moves to the brain. The most common tumor types in adults are gliomas and meningiomas. In children, incidence is generally highest before age 1 and again between ages 2 and 12. The most common types of brain tumour in children are astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas and brain stem gliomas.

CAUSES OF BRAIN CANCER
What causes brain cancer is not exactly known but there has recently been a great deal of speculation on the role of cell phone radiation in the development of brain cancer. In fact, while studies generally have shown no link between cell phones and brain cancer, there is some conflicting scientific evidence that may be worth additional study, according to the FDA.

More accepted risk factors for brain cancer include; exposure to vinyl chloride and individuals with risk factors such as having a job in an oil refinery, as a chemist, embalmer, or rubber industry worker show higher rates of brain cancer. Other risk factors such as smoking, radiation exposure, and viral infection (HIV) have been suggested but not proven to cause brain cancer. Patients with a history of melanoma, lung, breast, colon, or kidney cancer are at risk for secondary brain cancer.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BRAIN CANCER
Onset of symptoms is usually insidious and brain tumors are often misdiagnosed. Brain Cancers cause central nervous system changes by invading and destroying tissues and by secondary effects such as pressure on the brain. Symptoms vary but in general, brain cancer symptoms include: Abnormal pulse and breathing rates, deep, dull headaches that recur often and persist without relief for long periods of time, difficulty walking or speaking, dizziness, eyesight problems including double vision, seizures, vomiting and at the late stages of the disorder dramatic changes in blood pressure may occur. Although headaches are often a symptom of brain cancer, it is important to remember that most headaches are due to less serious conditions such as migraine or tension, not cancer.

DIAGNOSIS OF BRAIN CANCERS
In most cases a definitive diagnosis is made by a tissue biopsy. Other diagnostic tools include; patient history, a neurologic assessment, skull x-rays, a brain scan, CT scan, MRI, a lumbar puncture and cerebral angiography. Meningiomas, arising from the covering around the brain or spinal cord, account for about 20% of brain cancers and are generally more benign.

TREATMENT OF BRAIN TUMORS
How to treat brain tumors depends on the age of the patient, the stage of the disease, the type and location of the tumor, and whether the cancer is a primary tumor or brain metastases. Brain cancer and brain tumors are somewhat unique because of the blood
brain barrier, which severely restricts the types of substances in the bloodstream that are allowed by the body into the brain and makes drug treatment extremely difficult. Because of this more and more research is being undertaken in delivering medication by means of nanoparticles, amongst the properties of nanoparticles that make them ideal candidates for recognizing and treating brain cancer, their ability to deliver a wide variety of payloads across the blood-brain barrier is perhaps the most important.

Brain cancers location and ability to spread quickly makes treatment with surgery or radiation like fighting an enemy hiding out among minefields and caves, and explains why the term brain cancer is all too often associated with the word inoperable.
Brain cancer survival statistics for the deadliest of tumors such as gliomas have not improved significantly over the past two decades and the clinical armamentarium is, to a large extent, still dependent on surgery and radiation therapy, treatments known to leave survivors with devastating cognitive deficits. Gamma knife surgery is a radiosurgery technique used to treat people with brain cancer and other neurological disorders

The most deadly form of brain cancer may be treatable with a vaccine that uses proteins. Unlike measles or mumps vaccines, which are meant to prevent disease, the brain cancer vaccine turns on the patient’s own immune system so it will help kill the tumor. When the vaccine is injected, it stimulates the immune system to kill off brain cancer cells and prevent the regrowth of tumors that have already been treated.

PROGNOSIS
The chances of surviving for a person with a brain tumor: Prognosis greatly depends on all of the following: type of tumor extent of the disease size and location of the tumor presence or absence of metastasis the tumor’s response to therapy, age, overall health, and medical history, tolerance of specific medications, procedures, or therapies. Metastatic brain cancer indicates advanced disease and has a poor prognosis. Unfortunately, the most common form of primary brain cancer, glioblastoma, is also the most aggressive and lethal but teratomas and other germ cell tumors although they have the capacity to grow very large may have a more favorable prognosis.

About 90% of malignant mesothelioma is asbestos-related.

Mesothelioma affects men most due to the high exposure of asbestos in industrial typed jobs. Mesothelioma can be caused even due to an exposure to Asbestos for 1-2 months but it is most commonly found in those who had prolonged or persistent exposure. A bill called the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005 (FAIR Act of 2005) introduced on March 17, 2005, seeks to create set amounts of compensation for mesothelioma victims, which would depend on their symptoms.

Pleural Mesothelioma is considered as the most common type of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma law firms are large enough to have huge resources and years of experience. Using this argument experienced mesothelioma lawyers win claims for their clients, basically pleading the invariable loss of health and active life associated with the rare cancer.

Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which the malignant cells are found in the sac that lines the chest or abdomen. Many people have resilient genes that seem to fend off diseases such as mesothelioma. Some mesothelioma treatment costs may be covered by health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid.

Another problem with these symptoms is that they are similar to those of pneumonia (shortness of breath), and this tends to lead to the wrong treatment being administered to an individual afflicted with pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor occurring in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, often associated with exposure to asbestos dust. Rarely, mesothelioma occurs in other mesothelial tissue, such as on the heart or on the reproductive organs.

Pericardial mesothelioma: This form of mesothelioma which attacks the pericardium surrounding the heart is extremely rare. In addition to these conventional mesothelioma cancer treatments, there are also various experimental treatments currently under investigation which offer new hope. Your lawyer will need to know the extent of damage and the stage of your cancer, so it is advisable to provide a medical report from your doctor to enable your lawyer to put together a solid mesothelioma lawsuit and get as much compensation as possible for you and your loved ones.

Diagnosis and Treatment If you know that you’ve been exposed to asbestos at the workplace or elsewhere, while it’s not advisable to panic, it is smart to be on the lookout for symptoms of mesothelioma so that it can be diagnosed as soon as possible. Let us begin by asking this simple question – what is mesothelioma. For pleural mesothelioma, either a full lung or the muscle below the lungs that help with breathing (the diaphragm) may be removed.

However, the options for relief and treatment of people with peritoneal mesothelioma have improved tremendously with ongoing research, especially if the cancer is diagnosed early and treated vigorously. Compensation for Mesothelioma Victims If you’ve been one of the increasing number of victims suffering from a heartbreaking mesothelioma problem or other asbestos-related illness, you have the right to be compensated for your horrifying experience. Control programs are very important to be carried out in workplaces where there are hazardous minerals like asbestos that can affect workers with severe pathologies such as malignant mesothelioma cancer, malignant lung cancer, asbestos related disease or asbestosis, among others.

Since mesothelioma usually has a latency period of 20-50 years where the illness is not apparent, most people with this cancer did not know about it until it was too late. Mesothelioma lawsuit records: Keep copies of all the documents that you hand over to your lawyer relating to your lawsuit. In his book about mesothelioma, Kraus sets out how he beat the odds.

The 2 common types of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen organs). The latency period (amount of time the disease takes to start taking effect) of mesothelioma is 30 – 50 years which is one of the reasons it is so difficult to cure because it is very difficult to tackle in its early stages. The physical and psychological strain of malignant mesothelioma can be severe, and western medical treatments meant to heal often cause unexpected and irritating side effects.

Do You Suffer From Mesothelioma?

The cause of pericardial mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Now, in the 21st century (some 50 years later – the latency period of pericardial mesothelioma), these young men who are now over 60 years of age are beginning to exhibit the symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma. As with all cancers, early detection is the best defence against mesothelioma.

For instance, in several cases it was found that people now being diagnosed with mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos thirty to forty years ago, or even before that. It is believed that many people, who are afflicted by mesothelioma, are not even aware of it. Another risk of developing mesothelioma is using products that contain asbestos.

Today, mesothelioma victims and their relatives struggle to cope with the disease. Mesothelioma can also occur from non-occupational exposure, as evidenced by manifestation of the disease in women whose exposure came from washing the clothing of men who worked with asbestos. Malignant mesothelioma is graded upon the extent they have spread.

Peritoneal mesothelioma does not always respond to traditional mesothelioma treatment ways. Before 1980 there were no laws protecting the workers from Asbestos exposure in the workplace, however, once it was seen that people working in an environment of Asbestos exposure were being diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma 30-50 years after their exposure, laws began to change. The people who had a widespread exposure to Asbestos were at an increased risk of developing Mesothelioma.

This long latency period is one main reason why the number of people suffering from Mesothelioma is increasing everyday, in spite of preventive measures taken by the government as well as individuals. There are a number of treatment options available to mesothelioma patients. Don’t Lose Hope Most people who have worked with asbestos in the past do not begin to show symptoms of Mesothelioma until thirty to forty years later.

In addition to the national forums, there are many online support and chat forums that educate people about mesothelioma and share the experiences of others who are afflicted with the disease. Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lungs, is the most common, accounting for about 75 percent of all malignant mesothelioma. Other more serious health ailments caused by asbestos exposure include pleural effusion, pleural plaques, pleural calcification, and Mesothelioma (a highly malignant disease).

In most cases, it takes many years for people to show signs of Mesothelioma Cancer in the body. Abdominal symptoms and the systemic effects of cancer can cause severe weight loss in people with peritoneal mesothelioma. Mesothelioma victims and other asbestos-related diseases are entitled to recover damages from the asbestos manufacturing companies.

Treatment of pleural mesothelioma is limited and as yet there is no proper cure. Pleural mesothelioma targets the lining of the lung, peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal cavity, and pericardial mesothelioma targets the lining around the heart. The symptoms of the pericardial mesothelioma are persistent coughing, palpitations, and shortness of breath and chest pain.

Over the past few years treatments have improved for treating mesothelioma, but further clinical trials are needed to continue mesothelioma treatment methods. A stage I, or localized, malignant mesothelioma is one that has not spread beyond the area it originated in. Many of the symptoms of mesothelioma can easily be mistaken for allergies or a common cold.

If you have been exposed to asbestos in the work place in the last 50 years, you may be at risk for developing mesothelioma. The most common type is epithelial mesothelioma.
