The History Of Daggers And Collecting Daggers

A lot of people have heard of the term dagger but there is sometimes confusion on what it actually is. A dagger is basically just a knife with a short blade that is usually anywhere from six inches to twenty inches in length. In the past, it was usually used in combat and even sometimes used for preparing food, cleaning animals for eating and other common cutting tasks. These little knives usually come with a sheath or case to hold and protect the knife’s blade.

One of the best reasons that the dagger was used a lot in combat was because it was easier to carry and its smaller size made it easier to use in combat situations. These reasons made it a little more popular than a sword especially for smaller people who did not have the strength or stamina to carry and swing a heavy sword. Daggers were used a lot during ancient times but are now mainly just used more for collection or decorative purposes.

Daggers can come in all different sizes, styles and shapes and these include many types of blades. Blades are usually found to be straight or curved and many times this can depend on the origin of the dagger. There are also daggers made for decoration only which are not meant to be used in the traditional way as you would think - no cutting or killing for these daggers. These decorative type daggers feature fancy handles with engravings as well as engraved blades. A lot of dagger collectors flock to these decorative daggers to add to their collections.

The styles of daggers can usually also depend on the region that the dagger was made or the design originated from. There are many places in the world that, in a matter of speaking, have their own dagger design. Places like China, Scotland, Japan and many more have specific designs of daggers and a lot of collectors who are knowledgeable in each region know a dagger’s design origin just by looking at it.

Collecting daggers is great hobby and also an excellent way to learn some history of various locations that you may be interested in. There are many places both online and offline that different collectible daggers can be found at reasonable prices. Of course, like all other things, there are rare ones that might cost more but for the most part they are very reasonable priced. It will not take long before you have your own collection of daggers and history.

A most loved sport in America and in all parts of the world is football. A huge number of people love to play or watch football games. Football’s fame has reached a certain height that various organizations dedicated to it earn a lot of money through the commercials of its bigger events. Football itself and its market is worth billions over billions of dollars, and is still growing. The internet offers numerous web sites solely dedicated to the game and everything that has any connection to it.

The sport’s popularity has extended to the items that are linked to it. A perfect example is the football card collection, a very interesting hobby that has gained millions of followings worldwide. Football collectors who constantly follow the development of the sport find that the football cards are not only for prestigious display, but also for acquiring useful, and in some cases, real time information regarding football players and different historical football events. There is more to it than just plainly being a hobby, it is an educative collection.

However, football cards are more known for being expensive. The value of each card can be very high and even becomes higher with time. For this reason, football card collection and investment serve a constantly growing market. Some companies produce these football cards and special collections. Navigating the football cards’ prices can be done through a unique football price guide that also contains descriptions of the cards and their approximate values.

Hence, wise money investment in the collection of football cards means buying rare football cards and waiting until the value of football cards get bigger. For starters though, one can procure the usual and simple football cards and learn the trick through time.

Another good way to invest in football cards is to purchase separate cards from a variety of suppliers and create an exceptional collection out of it. A football card collection sells at a much higher value than individual cards do.

It is therefore a clever move to look around the neighborhood and beyond for the best sources of football cards. There are shops exclusively distributing football cards, and offering ideas on how to create your own card collection masterpiece. Many football card shops are now selling their items online, making it even more convenient for an enthusiast to look into their most favored pieces. The keenest collectors have a better trick to this card trading. Different football clubs practice this system of exchange for collectors to find diverse football cards.

For beginners, all pieces of information that can be acquired from fellow fanatics and from all related media will be very helpful. Notably, engaging in talks with other football hobbyists from all parts of the globe, collectors or not alike, can add to your quest to familiarize yourself with the world of football.

Football card collection definitely takes the football aficionados to where their fondness is. And it is a bonus to know that it is also a wise way to invest hard-earned money. Now, who says fun and practicality can never stand equal when it comes to pastimes?

The Bowie Knife: A Collector’s Item

The classic Bowie knife was not just one design, but rather a sequence of knives reinvented quite a few times by Jim Bowie. The earliest such model type was made by a man named Jesse Cliff. Jim Bowie’s idea directly bared a resemblance to the Spanish hunting knives of those days and varied a little from an ordinary butcher knife. The blade is later on described as:

* 9 1/2″ in length, 1/4″ inch thick and 1 1/2″ inches wide
* It was straight-backed having no clip point
* Simple riveted wood scale handle

The type most frequently recognized as the chronological Bowie knife would typically have no less than six inches of blade length. Although some would reach 12 inches or more; and have a width that would reach to about four to five centimeters. The backside of the blade sometimes had a narrow piece of malleable metal (normally copper or brass) inlaid premeditated to grasp an enemy’s blade, and also frequently had a superior guard which bowed to the fore at an angle (S-guard), that is also directed to capture an enemy’s blade. The version attributed to James Black (a blacksmith) had the back border of the bent clip point, also called the “false edge” sharpened and filed in order to permit someone educated in European skills of saber fencing to carry out the tactic identified the “back slash” or “back cut.” Typically cast in a mold, the brass quillon is fastened to safeguard the hand.

The Different Bowie Knives:

A. “Hunter Bowie Knife”
The hunter Bowie knife was created in New Jersey by a cutler named Alfred Hunter. The knives that he made have been legendary and are rarely seen in the market these days. A Spanish notch is visible in the blade which is also found in many historical knives. Its blade is made of high carbon steel with nickel and wood as the handle. The overall length is fourteen inches and it weighs up to 12oz.

B. “New Orleans Bowie”
Pradel, the knife maker of New Orleans, crafted the knife through replicating the existing original. The grip is made of a checkered buffalo horn and the clear lines give the knife an outstanding appearance. Like the Hunter Bowie Knife, this is made of high carbon steel and it also has the length of up to 14 inches. However, it weighs lighter than the previous classification.

C. “Chevalier Bowie”
The Chevalier Knife has been crafted in a little shop in Broadway. It was named after the man who created it, John Chevalier. Nowadays, this type of knife is well-known among collectors and users too. They are much sought after especially by those who purchase knives for collection purposes. The nickel silver tip and throat give it an intimidating appearance. The extravagance is perfected by its authentic leather sheath. Like the others, it is made mostly of carbon steel and its handle is crafted with the use of a genuine stag. It weighs almost the same as the other Bowie knives too.

D. “Vicksburg Bowie”
The Vicksburg Bowie came out in the year 1836 and was manufactured by the W. & S. Butcher Company. Its grip or handle resembles that of a dog bone. The American market was awed by its appearance and since them it became a big hit in the industry. Its handle also has nickel silver plus it has an inlaid shield. It is a little bit shorter and weighs lighter than the other Bowie types.

E. “Horse and Gator Bowie”
In the middle of the year 1850, the Woodhead and Hartley Corporation produced yet another enticing knife designs. Its distinctive logo which is embossed in the handle looks like a half alligator and a half horse. It became a major buy in the market because of its intricate carvings and its plush look.

There are several other types of Bowie knives. In fact, mentioning all of them would probably take hours. However, the above classifications are the oldest and are among the most famous of the Bowie knife collection. Up to now, knife collectors find it difficult to search for the all original ones. You can only be lucky if you’ll still be able to purchase one.

Does New York Really Have The Best Sports Fans Or The Best Sports Teams?

04 May.
Posted by teahupoo in Collecting | No Comments

New York City is a city where everyone takes pride in the team that is from there. New York is more than likely the most popular city when it comes to talking about major league teams. I’ve never been there but I hear that there isn’t a day or night that there isn’t a major sporting event happening in that city.

The National Hockey League that near lost its sport is now up and running. New York is known well by the Rangers who got Shannahan from going back to the Red Wings. They perform their home games at Madison square garden.

Set aside hockey, there are more than many other major sports you can see while staying in New York City. I believe there are a few baseball fans in the city. I say only a few because they obviously had to make two teams for so many fans. I will say that the fans do stay loyal when it comes to major league games. The New York Mets and the Yankees draw more than enough loyal respect from their loving fans from this city.

The crazy thing to me is that the double making of teams didn’t stop here. It appears that New York City also has made two really good football teams as well, the Jets and the Giants. Even though I really don’t like either team I give New York props for having two teams that can be supported by all the fans.

Set aside, it also appears that there is still only one basketball team and that is the Knicks. I will not discuss here how it is unfair to the other sports playing in this city but this one team seems to have all the fans attention when they play not just a piece of them. With all so many sports going on in this City it’s crazy to know that men in this city actually keep a job and don’t have a pocket T.V. to go with them everywhere they go.

I don’t know about your humble abode, but around my area it’s hard enough to get anyone to go to a family gathering everyone is always doing something else. I don’t see how women in New York keep a guy but they must do the same they must love the same as they do. But to all of the women and the men that they all so love, I have to say good job for supporting your men and respecting the teams that are in the city you live in. all the sports in your city have to draw attention to you somehow because they all draw attention to the fans.

Some Ways You Can Take Advantage Of Some Little Known Tactics To Buy Collectibles On eBay

03 May.
Posted by teahupoo in Collecting | No Comments

One of the great things about the internet and with eBay in particular is that due to the company being in existence in almost every corner of the globe you can find some very unique and interesting items that cannot be found in any other place. The key to finding collectibles and being able to buy them at a decent price is to take advantage of some little known tactics that many people don’t know about.

One way to keep up with items that you are particularly interested in is to find the category on eBay and then add it to you favorites in your web browser so that you can easily keep up with it. Another thing that happens all the time is that sellers on eBay often make mistakes when selling an item or they may not know the real value of the item and will list it as just an average item when in fact it may actually be quite rare.

One caveat that I must offer is to not blindly believe that the description of something being sold on eBay is factual. I have seen many auctions advertise something as valuable, rare, or hard to find when they were really nothing special. Never bid on something that you do not have an idea of the value of. One thing that will save you a lot of time in your searches is to keep track of certain sellers whom you have found to always have the particular collectibles you are seeking, you can even contact them and ask them to email you if they get certain items.

Don’t get wrapped up in the auction hype and think that if you don’t win the item you will never have another chance. eBay is enormous and they have millions of items for sale everyday so the odds are that what you are looking for will become available again. You must never put yourself in a position of thinking that you must have an item, if you do you will end up paying too much. You must always be willing to let the item go if it brings a certain price so set a price that you think it is worth and if it goes above that you just let it go. I used to buy cars at auctions and I would have a figure that I was willing to pay for each car I bid on, if the price went above my figure I walked away and didn’t look back.

Always calculate the shipping costs when you are bidding on items and if you are buying multiple products from a single seller contact them and ask them what kind of deal they will give you on the shipping or postage if you win multiple items.
