When Life Has Handed You a Lemon

02 Mar.

In everyone’s life, bad times come along with the good times. And even though we wish that we could sidestep a lot of the pain that life can offer, this simply isn’t a realistic way to live. But there are ways that you can turn bad times into productive and educational opportunities in your life. Perhaps instead of looking at things as though they are simply bad, you might want to think about them as turning points in your path toward your success. After all, good and bad seem to balance themselves out. Here’s how to help motivate yourself to look at things in this way.

Figure Out Why You are Upset

If you were to ask someone why they feel upset or down about life, they might give you a laundry list of things that aren’t pleasing them. They might tell you that their dog ran away, their mother died, or that they haven’t felt well since last year. But while these items are all things that can upset you, you need to start looking at WHY they upset you. So often, we get wrapped up in the ‘what’ that we forget about how these events affect us. Using the previous list:

- You’re upset that your dog ran away because he was a good friend to you and you got him with your last girlfriend. He was always there to keep you company.

- You’re upset that your mother died because you will miss her good advice and her presence.

- You’re upset that you’re not feeling well because it has caused you to miss work.

What you are doing is focusing on moving past the ‘what’ of the problem and into the ‘why’ - and you can do more with the why than you can with the what.

Use the Why to Get By

By taking a few moments to think about why things make you upset, you will be able to see solutions to your problems. Once you have taken away the frustration and the anger that something bad has happened to you, you can begin to move toward a more positive place.

- Instead of being upset that you lost your dog, try starting searches to find him and start hanging out with your friends more to get the company you miss.

- Instead of being upset that your mom died, give yourself time to grieve and then make sure to spend time talking about the things that you loved about her. See if you can continue any traditions that she might have started and write down the advice that she gave you so that you can pass it onto others.

- Instead of being upset that you’re sick, talk to your doctor about how you can get better. Listen to their advice and see if it helps. Take steps to take better care of yourself on your own too.

As you begin to look at the situations you have encountered, you will notice that there are things you can do to begin to see the upward swing in your mood again. It’s when we sit still with our emotions that we don’t get anywhere with the ‘lemons’ in our life.
