Do You Need A Life Coach?

12 Jun.
Posted by successu7 in Coaching | No Comments

Today, life coaching has become such a popular topic. It seems that everyone is getting into personal development and finding the benefits of developing ourselves. Every week a seminar is conducted by a life coach somewhere. But, at what point is it time to say ‘yes, I need a life coach’ to improve what you do?

What is a life coach? The simplest definition is a walking encyclopedia! They literally have answers. But, whereas a book worm is someone who simply has the theoretical the life coach who is actively practicing is someone who has the practical, and not just the theory, and here is where they can benefit you.

Do you have a business and now want to grow it in size geometrically, exponentially? Do you want to get all round success in life? Or do you want to get fit, and healthy? A life coach can help with all these area, and there are some who generalize, while others are more specific.

The first point is to consider what you do, and where you need help in. For example if you want to improve your finances, and build wealth a Feng Shui life coach may not be the best option. Though Feng Shui is great and can help, the first concern should be to focus on the result you want. If you want a glass of water; 10 litres of Coca Cola will be no use!

The benefits a life coach can bring to the table are that they know the answers. In fact many of the life coaches have become successful because they themselves had a problem and found the solution. Another benefit that a life coach can give you is that they also have different clients from different areas and industries. This mixture of knowledge, which is in a broader view, can aid you in surpassing your competitors.

Finding a life coach and enlisting there help in the area of your needs also gives you the ability that they can see your business or problem from an external point of view. In effect they are ‘out of the box’, and can give you solutions which you likely could not see before. This benefit of life coaches is one which makes many companies and people dedicated to excellence to find a life coach and enlist there help.

Finding a life coach is not an easy process. Life coaching as a profession is a pretty new field. It was only a few years ago that life coaching was unheard of. The first point is to consider what you want the life coach to do exactly. In what area do you need help in? Remember the above point about the glass of water. There are many life coaches; however, if you need a specialist in direct marketing for business, many life coaches may not be able to give you full benefit.

Researching is key, and simply choosing the first life coach you find may not be the best way to go. Once you find a life coach, it is advisable to ask what they can bring to the table. In effect what can they do for you?

What To Expect From A Life Coach

Helping others out is a gift for some individuals. They have a calling and a yearning to help their fellow man when all hope is lost. Firefighters, rescue personnel, doctors and mental professionals are all needed at some time or another.

One profession that is gaining in popularity is that of a life coach. Life coaching is a profession dedicated to helping people gain the necessary skills they need to obtain a goal. It is not a career field for everyone though. It takes a special person to be a mentor to someone else.

Far too many people hire a life coach expecting the man or the woman to do all of the work for them. The individual wants something for his or her life and expects the mentor to get that for them.

Effective coaching skills are ignored and the person continues with an “I want” attitude that is neither productive nor effective. The mentor’s job is to help, not to do all of the work and push the individual towards the goal.

If you need leadership mentoring for a job, or you have simply found yourself in need of skills to help you overcome a life issue, then you may need the help of someone capable of life coaching. But go into the coaching relationship with reasonable expectations. You cannot expect miracles.

The coach is there to help you with life tips, not provide you with all of the answers. Most of the problems in your life you will have to work out for yourself but he or she can be there to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to rest on.

Coaching people is not limited to just the job or your personal life. There are life coaches for dating as well. Should you find yourself striking out in the dating game, employing someone to help you may be a great idea. Consider dating coaches as your own personal cheer box that shouts out encouragements and gives you dating advice.

Everyone needs a little help to overcome some of their problems every once in a while. You will be able to get that help from your life coach. Sure, they cannot solve your problems for you but they can provide you with the motivation you need to solve the problem yourself.

Find the help you need to change your life and you will be taking a positive step in the right direction. Even when things seem to be the hardest, you are still learning valuable, life building lessons to help you on your way.

The principle being that a positive work environment produces positive results. There can be a variety of effective coaching methods used to help foster a workplace that not only thrives but is also a place where employees want to be.

It provides an outlet for competitive behavior and teaches cooperation through teamwork.

One person cannot win the softball game. Through the coaching process, employees become more aware of the fact that it takes team effort to win. This principle is important for the employees to grasp.

Everyone knows that there is some competitiveness in the workplace. It is up to the management to determine what form of competitiveness this is; be it positive or negative. Paintball pits teams against each other in a retreat.

A career life coach will oversee the excursion and explain that a little healthy competitiveness can take people out of their daily rut. They do not have to look at it as something negative or harmful. It is simply individuals looking to push themselves and their boundaries.

Should you find that your business is going downhill due to poor employee productivity and there seems to be a lack of cooperation in your workplace, then you may want to look into hiring an executive coach to help bring your employees back on track. A business coach consultant can provide you and your employees with more motivation and give you tips on how to best inspire your employees to set and reach higher goals and aspirations.

What To Look For When Seeking A Life Coach

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Man, that person has it easy?” You probably are not alone. It is easy to look at another person’s life and think that they have it made. They seem to excel at everything and have had it all handed to them on a silver platter. But that is probably not the case.

They have to work at overcoming obstacles the same way that you do. Nothing ever comes that easy no matter whom you are. Everyone must break free from the easy path if they want to be a better, more motivated person.

A life coach is someone who is trained in the coaching process to help individuals cope with whatever problems that may be weighing them down and keeping them from succeeding. Take for example someone who is stuck in a rut at work and cannot find the motivation to break free from the rut and try for another position.

They want to move on but just do not have the motivation to do so. The career life coach will encourage the individual to achieve his or her goals and strive for more.

When looking for an effective coaching mentor for both life and business, it is important to look for a few qualities. The first quality is someone who is sympathetic to the problems of his or her clients. There has to be a rapport established.

This does not mean that the mentor will go easy on the person just because he or she is nice and wants to make friends. They must have a bond of respect and trust for the coaching relationship to work.

An important quality is time management. The mentor must set an example with his or her own life skills. If the mentor is having trouble keeping appointment times or seems to set expectations and give unreasonable goals, then he or she does not have the proper training needed for the job.

In fact, a life coach should not be setting goals or expectations at all. That is the client’s job and the coach is there to just help motivate the individual along their pathway to those particular aspirations.

One important thing to note: interview several coaches for the job. You should develop a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding. As well, the mentor should see your life goals as obtainable.

He or she should have a clientele base and be able to furnish references when needed. Good luck on finding your own mentor!

Motivate Others Through Life Coach Training

There are always amazing opportunities to triumph over failure or a tragic event. Some people allow those events to break them and defeat their sense of purpose. Others rise to the challenge and live through the incident. It is what you make of a negative life issue that will foretell how you will handle life afterwards. If you have had success triumphing over a tragedy and want to share your story, then you may want to look into life coach training, to be a motivational speaker for others.

You should know that life coach training is not standardized. There really is not an officially recognized program that offers a degree in leadership mentoring or something of the like. You can find certificate programs that can give you guidance in the field, by teaching you how to interact with others and to provide help in the areas that a person needs help, but you have to have the need to help others and be able to provide solid, life building techniques based on your own experiences.

There are some organizations that you can belong to if you want to join them and there are always classes in psychology, sociology and therapy that can help you gain the necessary skills that you will need to help motivate other people. Some of these organizations are: the International Coaching Council, the International Association of Coaching and the European Coaching Institute. You can also take courses online that may be able to help you with your training.

Anyone can become a mentor, a “coach for life” or a motivational speaker. If that is your goal, then to be successful at providing effective coaching you must have some sort of positive effect on other people. You would not want to stand in front of a crowd, become flustered and unable to continue.

Even worse is not having a positive message to influence others. You should be able to address a crowd successfully and know how to speak in public. Those are two valuable tools that a motivational speaker must have.

Chances are probably high that you will not find a leadership mentoring program or a coach training course close to you. Use a combination of online courses through the above organizations and also think about taking some college classes in psychology, public speaking and sociology.

They most certainly cannot hurt and will help you to become more comfortable when speaking in a group mentoring situation. Your job is to provide motivation and to lead other people through example so stick by your words and you will do fine.

Leadership Mentoring With A Business Coach

02 Jun.
Posted by nbisea in Coaching | No Comments

There is a success principle that most people in the business world operate by. It is not enough to merely get along throughout the daily work pile that accumulates on their desk. They want to get ahead, receive recognition for their work and receive raises based on their performance.

But it is easy to get into a rut and have your performance level start to lag. The tedious work load can cause you to lose your spark and drive. That is where the business coach steps in to help you improve your performance, yet it is not the same thing as leadership mentoring.

Leadership mentoring is a process that occurs when one person with more experience takes another person “under their wing,” to help them understand the workplace or their personal life in a better way. A business coach is not the same thing as a mentor and you need to be aware of the difference.

One works by providing guidance (the coach) and the other works by instructing. The two are often confused with one another but in reality are different.

Many companies will bring in a coach consultant to help their employees when the business is beginning to flag. It is a way to help bring back the company into operating once again at a higher level of efficiency.

You have probably heard of motivational camps where employees are brought in and play team games with one another. This creates and fosters a competitive atmosphere but lets employees bond with each other.

Business coaches can not perform miracles and should not be promising great achievements. Those who do may be operating under fraudulent means.

This is to say that a coach should not make grand promises to up sales by fifty percent or have employees thinking that the coaching process will automatically result in advancements and promotions. This is simply not the case. Coaching people should be more about showing them that they can rely on themselves to make the necessary changes to help the business operate better.

A business coach must have experience in motivating people to try to achieve their goals and dreams. He or she needs to be educated in the business field. Talking to people one-on-one is great but to effectively motivate large groups of people there needs to be a spark and an initiative to lead others on to greatness. Bringing a coach into your life can mean the difference between the mundane workplace and one filled with opportunities.

What To Look Out For In A Mentor

23 May.
Posted by kevin03 in Coaching | No Comments

What exactly is mentoring? Mentoring is the process of being alongside someone to act as a support in their spiritual, personal or professional development.

It takes many forms and there are several different kinds of mentors but usually it is someone who is either a trusted friend or a guide or counselor.

The process of mentoring has proven to work well and has a high rate of success in most circumstances, whatever they may be. It is a fact that the majority of successful human beings were mentored at some point in their lives.

When you begin a mentoring program, the desired end result should be in your mind.

You should know the following:-

- Why do you want a mentor?
- What do you hope to achieve by being mentored?
- How will you measure you success?

When trying to find the right mentor for you, think about the points below:-

- Find someone who is further along the path than you are
- Make sure that particular someone works with the same values as you do
- Choose a mentor who you can relate to
- Your mentor has to be readily available at the times you need him or her

Your mentor should:-

- Be accessible by telephone as well as face to face for a chat
- Be keen to partake in your mentoring and be part of your development
- Encourage and inspire you and join in with the celebrations when you succeed
- Ensure you meet your deadlines like they were their own
- Be well connected and able to help you gain access to others when necessary
- Help you to set achievable goals, in a realistic yet challenging way
- Help you with ways in which to achieve your goals
- Give you constructive feedback on your performance (including your failures)
- Help you to find the solution to obstacles in your way
- Be willing to share their own resources in a way which will help you create your own
- Inspire and motivate you to make more of yourself and do more
-
Needless to say, there are some mentoring programs that are better than others so you need to do your homework before you choose the one you think suits you best. If you can familiarize yourself with the person you intend to become your mentor, either on a personal level or through the workplace you will know exactly what you can expect from him or her. Chat with other people who have been mentored using that program and ask whether or not they would recommend it. Will it be worth your time, money and the effort you have to put in? You will find that talking to people who have previously been mentored will be the best proof of performance you can get. A good mentoring program will give methodical training, cut down on the learning time and allow you to develop and expand.

This is what makes mentoring such a powerful tool enabling you to arrive at your personal potential and to do so quicker than you would on your own.

Prior to staring a mentoring program it is important that you are aware of what is expected of you, what you can expect and how you and your mentor will work together to achieve your goals.

Life Coaching Versus Therapy For Gays And Lesbians

19 May.
Posted by discovering_pride in Coaching | No Comments

Life coaching is a new and exciting way for people to work through their problems and get on with life…a life that is more rewarding than it was before. Unfortunately, coaching is a little known field and is often confused with therapy. The mission of coaching is to move people toward goal achievement. This is done through self-exploration: by identifying the obstacles they face and developing strategies to move past them.

Though therapy is commonly entered into by the gay and lesbian population, it is often not the best method to explore the issues they face. Psychologists are trained and licensed to treat people with mental illness. Since 1973, the American Psychiatric Association has acknowledged that homosexuality is not a mental illness. Therefore, many of the issues that exist among members of the GLBT community can be more appropriately be dealt with in the coaching arena. Here are several common areas of concern that gays and lesbians often face that may be resolved through life coaching:

Sexual identity exploration. Arriving at a conclusion about ones sexual orientation involves looking within and being honest about ones true feelings and desires. This process involves self-examination and honest validation and feedback by an independent source. People involved in this exploration of self often seek out professional guidance because they are fearful to discuss the possibility of homosexuality with friends or family members. In the past, the only professionals available were therapists…although now life coaches are ideal candidates to fill this role.

Coming out. Coming out is a goal to achieve, not a mental illness. The obstacle most gays and lesbians face when approaching a coming out situation is fear of rejection. The coach will work with the client to develop a realistic approach to coming out and support them through the process.

Relationship building. Except in cases involving sexual dysfunction or abusive situations, life coaching may be the best option to tackle many relationship issues. From exploring the best places to find a date to negotiating household duties, life coaching is well-geared toward getting couples toward their goal of a loving, fulfilling relationship. Many life coaches will also work with couples.

Self acceptance and social acceptance. Both of these acceptance issues require inner exploration and discovering new strategies to overcome fear and gain strength. Again, these are goals to work toward and are effectively dealt with by life coaching.

Reliance on therapists for assistance in approaching these common real-life issues has caused many gays and lesbians to label themselves as mentally ill when it is not true. Tackling these issues with the help of a life coach is a more healthy approach and does not involve assigning further stigma to an already compromised population.

So, when is therapy appropriate? Therapy is indicated when a mental illness is present. For instance, due to life circumstances, gays and lesbians often fall victim to clinical depression, which falls outside the scope of life coaching. Other mental illness such as bipolar disease, personality disorder, neurosis and psychosis are also appropriate diagnoses for mental health personnel to deal with. Many of these disorders require the use of medication and can only be addressed through the medical system.

For life management issues consider getting a life coach. A life coach will help you make a commitment to face and work through your problems. Life coaching often takes less time than therapy and more directly addresses your goals. Check it out!

Pat Cheney is a life coach working with gays and lesbians who are coming out in midlife and with spouses in gay-straight marriages. To find out more about her services, visit Pat’s website at http://www.discoveringpride.com.

Learning To Respond To Past Memories

22 Apr.
Posted by jimmycox in Coaching | No Comments

I want you to try to return to your cradle. Do you remember the time when you lay in the cradle kicking up your toes - and possibly kicking up a row at the same time?

Do you remember the time when you were taking your first lesson in walking, and the floor seemed to wobble a good deal, and you tried to steady things by balancing yourself a little heavily on one leg and then on the other, and finally finished up by making a slight dent in the linoleum with the point of your poor little nose?

Do you remember the time when you had an idea that anything and everything in this world existed simply and solely for your special purposes, and that all you had to do in order to obtain your desire at all times was to put out your hands for it? And if you did not get just what you put your hands out for, and have your wish immediately gratified, how you would yell with an extremely great lustiness, and keep up the din until you were practically exhausted?

Do you remember the time when you first went to school, and some other little boy (or some other little girl) made faces at you, or threw mud at you, or did something else similarly mean, so that you had an overpowering realization that this is a wicked, wicked world indeed; and that there is only one place within the vast confines of this vale of woe where any God’s child can ever expect to exist in peace and comfort, and this place was at your mother’s knee - a place where by snuggling you could shut out the bad exterior world from your vision?

Probably you do not remember any of these things; nevertheless, no memories are lost. The memories of every experience which we have undergone from the cradle are stored in the great unconscious mind; and many of these memories can be recalled under certain conditions and by certain procedures.

By means of the analytic method we now know that our temperamental characteristics and general mental attitudes are what they are solely by reason of the influences of this vast deposit of buried memories. We know, also, that our conscious conduct is largely motivated by these buried memories. We know, in fact, that we think as we do, and feel as we do, wholly by reason of the existence of these stupendous unconscious influences.

You have heard such terms as subconscious mind, unconscious mind, subliminal mind, and various other sorts of minds. Let us simplify things by considering the two very matter-of-fact terms conscious and unconscious.

The conscious mind needs no special definition, for we will consider it in the ordinary sense in which the term is used - to mean the reasoning faculties. By the term unconscious, psychoanalysts mean anything and everything that is not conscious.

Please don’t think of the term unconscious as an adjective, however. When I use the term unconscious I do not mean an unconscious mental condition, but a mental place.

Every memory that becomes stored in the unconscious has some intensifying or neutralizing influence on previously stored memories of similar complexion; and every time that you have held a thought in the consciousness in relation to a memory (thinking), you have produced a certain modification of some sort or other on this stored mental material. The thoughts that come up into the consciousness as a result of a stirring up by means of attention are therefore derived from these tremendous possibilities.

The consciousness is only a very puny mental area in comparison with the vast extent of unconscious thought activities existing beneath it. Not a billionth part of the memories of past experiences is available for direct utilization; nevertheless they all influence the conscious conduct - directly or indirectly. In fact, these influences constitute the actual foundations of the personality.

The results of conscious attention in liberating memories in the unconscious mental storehouse are governed wholly by what are in reality mechanical processes; nevertheless the nature and extent of these possibilities are fabulous.
