Who Are The People Selling Sports Memorabilia Today?

04 May.

The business of marketing collectible sports items these days is a huge business mainly because there are so many insatiable sports fans and collectors all over. Most sports fans are looking for a big time hero to look up to. Just about everyone who follows sports has a favorite player that they like to follow. This is another reason for the success of the memorabilia traders, connecting you to your favorite player. The memorabilia market covers a wide range of interests as well with something for football and baseball fans as well as those of sports as diverse as tennis and NASCAR.

Most marketing experts consider the sports collectible market to be a no lose business. Every year there are more fans that are going crazy for particular sports items. Those athletes who reach the pinnacle of their given sport for the most part do so because of their work ethic as well as their talent. Individuals have an easier time maintaining their stay at the top than teams do. In NFL football I can give you two recent examples, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of a few years ago and the Pittsburgh Steelers of 2005 won the Super Bowl and the following year they had horrible seasons. Nevertheless, sports fans that follow a team to a major championship tend to be big buyers of the memorabilia that goes along with it. It doesn’t matter whether it is the NCAA National Football or Basketball Championship or the Super Bowl sports fans love to collect these items.

The exposure that comes from the news media drives the frenzy of the market even more as they play up the winners and make heroes of the stand out players in the championship games. Anyone who followed college football knew who Vince Young was before he ever came into the pro ranks just like now, Tim Tebow of Florida is spoken of daily on ESPN and is even being spoken of as the hands down winner for the Heisman Trophy even though he is only a sophomore.

There are all kinds of people selling sports memorabilia including some former athletes themselves like Emmit Smith who set up a sports collectible business and let his family run it. A lot of the everyday vendors travel and set up shop on location at the games themselves. This can be an expensive and time consuming enterprise but if one has the business plan set up right it can make a good return as well. If you live in an area with a fairly large mall you may have two or three collectible stores.

The so called, “Aging of America” is another reason that collectible vendors have to strive to have something for people of all ages. Those sports fans who are older may still want to follow the heroes from their heyday.
