What is the Liturgical Calendar

Though each calendar year there are seasons in which the church enters. Just like summer, winter and fall, the church also has seasons. Most people are familiar with the names of each of the liturgical calendar. The season are Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and of course, Ordinary Time. These are the basic division of how the Liturgical Calendar is divided.

The churches use this way to decide what readings are used, when Feast Days and Solemnities are observed. Many of the Solemnities are placed though the calendar based on dates. In both Easter and western sects of Christianity the dates of the feast days may be vary from year to year. Things like Easter are the prime example. Easter’s date is set within the Catholic Church by picking the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. That sets the date for Easter, which you then count back 6 weeks and there you have the start of Lent.

The date that Easter falls on also dictates a number of Solemnities, a day the Catholic Church has set aside and most correspond with an event in Christ.s life. The other Solemnities in the Catholic Church that are determined by the day within the liturgical calendar are The Ascension of the Lord, which is always 40 days after Easter, but moved to the following Sunday in some parts of the US. Pentecost is the 50th day after Easter. The Holy Trinity is always the Sunday after Pentecost.

There are also dates that are based off the date of Christmas although there are some Solemnities though the Liturgical Calendar that are a set and prescribed dates. For example. Dec 8 is always the Immaculate Conception, but the feast of Christ the King, is always the last Sunday before Advent. How advent is determined is to take Christmas go to the Sunday before it and count four Sundays prior to Christmas Day. Usually the Feast of Christ the King will fall during Thanksgiving weekend but not always.

Additionally, the other thing the Catholic Church does is they have divided up the readings in to 3 year cycles which over the course of those three years. If you read each daily reading you will have read the entire Bible. Most Catholics don.t know that to be the case and only think of what they hear each Sunday only. But each Sunday of time has a week attached to it though each of these seasons.

Additionally the Liturgical seasons have distinctive colors, Green, Purple, Red, Pink, White. If you walk into any Catholic church you would know what season it is based on vestment color. The Green vestment is the most prevalent and applies to ordinary time. The Pink Vestment is For the third week of Advent. The Purple Vestments are worn during penitential or atonement seasons of Advent and Lent. White Vestments are for the Liturgical Calendar periods of Christmas and Easter Seasons. And lastly there is Red vestments which are not indicative of a period of time but the blood of the martyrs. On a Feast day of a Martyr, the priest will wear red vestments during mass as well as the cardinals who are bishops who have vowed to die for Christ if the situation arises.

Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent and Easter

The Da Vinci Code: What can Christians Learn from it?

When Dan Brown’s book was first released, most of us yawned and thought, “Another one of those.” We’ve seen many books that “bash” Christianity on the market and of course snippets about Madonna’s latest publicity stunts.

Publicity is a “band wagon,” whether you take a stand for or against any Christian issue. The need for thought provoking entertainment that “pushes the envelope” of morality is far greater than the supply.

So what can Roman Catholics and other Christians learn or gain from all this? Would any other religion put up with this? In fact, this kind of entertainment might cause serious violence, rioting, and death, if it were pointed in other directions of religion or philosophy.

Let’s objectively look at Dan Brown’s book and the recent movie. The movie and the book are a mixture of fact and fiction, so a reader who has not read history, the Bible, or the Gnostic Gospels would be very confused. This has occurred before when people, who do not read, let Hollywood explain reality to them.

Why the confusion? Simply put, how many people are really reading anything? Pat yourself on the back, for the fact, that you do read. The national and global literacy rates are poor, no matter which government statistics are skewed to tell you otherwise. We live at a time, when a person who can read a warning sign is intellectually gifted.

Beside the “for or against” issues that surround the book and movie; The Da Vinci Code has created something that Dan Brown did not count on. It encourages all of us to read more and do some research. Much of our history is “blood thirsty.” Genocide, slavery, warfare, inquisitions, pogroms, and injustice fill the pages of our history books and our Holy Scriptures.

Dan Brown wanted fame and he has received it. However, Christianity will benefit from this controversy “in the long run.” For the first time, many people are reading and searching for factual information about Miriam of Magdala, Templars, Crusades, Inquisitions, Cathars, Gnostics, and the formulation of the early Roman Catholic Church. Is this a bad thing?

Only if we deny the truth, are research of our religion and the origins of Christianity a bad thing. When we deny the truth, then all of our time spent reading and researching is for nothing. It is time for governments and religious orders to reform themselves. No one should be allowed to violate laws due to a social position. “Cover ups” of past crimes take credibility away from government officials and religious leaders.

Lastly, through out history, women have been persecuted more than any other group. This is a common thread that still continues today. No government or religion can exist without the help of women, but women have to form a “united front.” Many successful families are held together by a balance of female and male qualities. It is time for “The Old Boys” to share power.

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian?

According to the bible a Christian is defined as a person living in tune with Gods desires and believing in Jesus Christ. A Christian believes Jesus Christ died on the cross and that one must be saved by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior. This is clearly stated in John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Christians walk with God and talk to him daily through prayer and meditation. There are also rules that Christians abide by which were handed down to Moses as the ten commandments:

1) God is the one true God.
2) Do not take the Lords name in vain or you will not be held guiltless at the time of reckoning.
3) Sunday, the Sabbath, is to be kept holy.
4) Honor your parents and elders as they have much wisdom you can learn from.
5) No murdering.
6) No lying.
7) No adultery.
8) No stealing.
9) Do not covet others belongings.
10) There are to be no other Gods, idols, etc.

God handed these commandments to Moses in Exodus 20. According to the Torah the entire bible was given to Moses in its entire format without any spaces and this is where the idea of the bible code originated from. Much research is still necessary into the bible codes and its meaning for the rest of us.
So, to be a Christian is to live a moral and higher standard life. It is to forgive others for their wrongdoings and turn the other cheek. This importance of forgiving is evidenced in the Lords Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Whether you are a Christian or not, it would be hard to argue against the fact that by following these rules one would have a better quality of life. Studies at the leading universities have documented that prayer and meditation lead to better health, reduced stress, longer life, and a better quality of life. Prayer, as documented in Readers Digest, has been proven to make oneself heal at a much faster rate from a variety of illnesses.

So, to recap, a Christian walks in tune with Gods desires. They have less stress as they do not hold grudges and believe in forgiveness. They hold themselves to higher ideals and believe in helping one another and, especially, those less fortunate. Christians make the world a better place, regardless of whether we believe in their religion or not. They promote peace, harmony and love and shun hatred, racism, and greed.

The Gospel of Judas - Christianity’s Most Wanted in a New Light

Judas Iscariot is the person who betrayed Jesus Christ and had stood as one of the most hated men in history. That is until the Gospel of Judas came along and shattered all myths. Considered the greatest archaeological find in the last sixty years, the Gospel of Judas has had the Christian world up in flames, by presenting Judas in an entirely different light.

Gospels hold a great significance in Christianity. They are actually early Christian literatures that recount the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The Vatican Church regards the four books in the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as the four canonic gospels. These canonic gospels almost constitute the foundation of Christianity and Christians all around the world have come to understand Jesus as the New Testament has presented him.

The four canonic gospels of the New Testament brand Judas as a traitor. According to the New Testament, Judas was a greedy person, who identified Jesus with a kiss in front of the Roman soldiers and had him caught. And all for 30 pieces of silver. Thus stands Judas as the most heinous conspirator in the Christian world.

Later however, Judas, filled with remorse, returned the money and took his life.

The Gospel of Judas has created quite a stir with revelations that go right against the writings in the Bible. Written in the form of dialogues between Jesus and Judas, the gospel begins with the proclamation that it is “the secret account of the revelation that Jesus spoke in conversation with Judas Iscariot.”

The Gospel of Judas has stirred the hornet’s nest. Hidden for about 2,000 years and discovered only in the late 1970s in Egypt to be stolen again and resurface in 2005, the discovery of the gospel is in itself an epical mystery. Written in Coptic language, the gospel has been scientifically traced back to sometime between 220 and 340 A.D. The mammoth translation process of the Gospel of Judas was undertaken with the funding of the National Geographic Society, and the world got to know about the facts with the revelation of the gospel itself at the National Geographic Society Headquarters and a special episode aired on the channel on April 9, 2006.

As the gospel reveals, Judas is the closest ally of Jesus Christ and also his closest confidante. In fact, Jesus even considered him worthy amongst all his followers, to receive his special teachings. Thus Christ takes Judas aside saying, “Step away from the others and I shall tell you the mysteries of the kingdom…”

One interpretation of the Gospel of Judas is that Jesus was feeling trapped inside his body and wanted someone to free him. And he preferred to be released by a friend rather than a foe. Jesus chose Judas for this act and told him, ‘…you will exceed all of them. For you will sacrifice the man that clothes me.”

The Gospel of Judas has challenged some age-old beliefs. Skeptics are raising doubts about the authenticity and the antiquity of the gospel, while the Archbishop of Canterbury deems the gospel to be more along the lines of “the eccentric fringes of the early century Church” that is being capitalized on by the conspiracy theorists.

While the world is still trying to come to terms with these newly unearthed facts about the “traitor”, Judas waits in the wings for his share of justice. The Gospel of Judas, it seems, has raised more questions than answers.

A Review Of The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe

The long awaited screen adaptation of the C.S. Lewis masterpiece doesn’t disappoint. The work of Lewis has long been admired, especially by the more intellectual of Christians. Lewis, a former atheist, used symbolism a great deal in his books and this movie is a perfect example of that.

In the movie as in the book, a group of four children find the world of Narnia through the back of a large piece of furniture known as a “wardrobe”. In this mystical world the children find animals that can speak as well as giants, dwarfs, centaurs, and other beasts too fantastic for description. In true good versus evil fashion, the movie shows the constant battle between the White Witch and her evil army and the good lion Aslan with his valiant army.

This movie has done a superb job of bringing the fantasy world of Narnia to the big screen. The technology and special effects are so incredible that you find yourself becoming entranced by the characters on the screen, especially Aslan, the lion. He dominates every scene he is in and becomes more and more human like as the story unfolds.

The children of the story are just like normal everyday kids and display this with their constant bickering and teasing of each other. However, when the situation demands it they all pull together and show great courage and sacrifice which is an inspiration to both children and adults.

Whether you are familiar with the book or not you will enjoy The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe immensely. After seeing what has been done in bringing this story to film I cannot wait to see some of the other C.S. Lewis books from the Chronicles of Narnia produced into movies as well.

Honor Thy Mother On Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day nearing, it is important for us to reflect on the Bible verse from Exodus 20:12, “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the lord thy God giveth thee.”

It is really important that we take the time to honor thy mother, and not just on Mother’s day. It is so important that it is the Ten Commandments. The first four Commandments teaches how to appreciate, worship, and obey the one true God. The six following Commandments teach us how to live in peace with our fellow humans, beginning with our parents.

In fact, according to Deuteronomy 21: 18-21 of the King James Version, “If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you”.

If you had difficulties with your parents growing up, it is important that you come to terms with them. For God commanded, saying, Honor thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition,” Matthew 15:4-6. It is never too late. In fact, this Mother’s day may be the perfect time for you to make up with your Mother if you have had a falling out.

Religion can often come between parents and children. Children often rebel against their parents, and in turn, their parent’s religion. If this applies to you, use this Mother’s day as a time to make amends. Go to church with your parents, it will mean the world to them and might just do you some good in return.

Our mothers are the women who brought us into this world. They loved you and took care of you when you could not take care of yourself. No matter what you do this Mother’s Day, make sure that you tell your mom that you love her, and remember the 5th Commandment.

Get Out of Debt in One Easy Step

Most people today are concerned about just one thing, money. Our society and now even many in the church are consumed with wealth and prosperity. Is there anything wrong with wealth and prosperity? No of course not. What is wrong is this. Have you ever heard the term, “fake it till you make it”? This term simply implies that you need to act like you are in a certain place, situation or feeling that you do not actually posses. Oh by the way, I will explain the title shortly, “Get Out of Debt in One Easy Step”.

What happens when you fake it till you make it is that you convince yourself and try to convince others that you are something that you are not. In some church facilities all over the country, this is what is happening and it is sending people straight into debt. You see, so many of us are being told that you are not blessed unless you have money. You are not blessed if you don’t have a big house. You are not blessed if you do not have a lot of money. This type of brain washing is creating a really big fake it till you make it crowd.

You see if you are convinced that you are not blessed because of the previously mentioned reasons, you will do anything to try and make others and yourself believe that you are blessed. You may go out and buy a car that you really can not afford, just for appearances. You may buy a house, just for show. You may take people out and buy expensive presents and put on a show, just make others believe that you are blessed.

Oh yeah, my title, “Get Out of Debt in One Easy Step”. Stop trying to empress people with your stuff. If you can sell that car or truck that you are just driving for show and have to eat bologna to get by, sell it! That house that you are about to lose because all you can afford to pay is the interest payments, sell it! That furniture that you are renting instead of buying because your credit is messed up, take it back today. Who are you trying to impress? The people that you are trying to impress with yours stuff are probably in just as much debt if not more than you.

Get out of debt today and have the thing that most people want any way. That thing is called peace.

The Kiss That Shook the World

What can make a kiss so sensational, that it is still talked about and discussed generations later, and even heatedly debated a couple thousand of years later? It makes you wonder, that must have been some kiss! and it
really was.

The kiss in question was between Jesus and his now infamous disciple Judas Iscariot, whom as you may recall, signaled to the Roman Soldiers, whom Jesus was, by kissing Jesus on the cheek; in the Garden of Gethsemane. This single act, so innocent in and of itself, has proven to be one of the most remembered and controversial kisses in all written human history,
ever! and it involved two men at that; but before you draw any conclusions, it involved much more important and deeper issues of ethics and principles that anyone can relate to. It was a kiss to remember, simply because this kiss signified and involved issues of betrayal, love and trust between men that bonded as companions and fraternal brothers, and shock, that someone so close to you, could somehow become your own undoing.

One of the other disciples of Jesus, reacted to this stunning sign of betrayal, by promptly slashing off the ear of one of the Roman soldiers in anger. Jesus, being ever benevolent, even at this critical moment
as he was being falsely arrested, saw fit to perform a miracle, by simply reattaching the man’s ear in that instant.

That kiss from Judas, planted on Jesus’ cheek at any other time, but this very moment, would certainly have been a welcome sign or greeting between close friends, as Jesus and his disciples had been known to become very close, travelling everywhere together; and sharing everything together.

However, this particular kiss from Judas, at this particular moment in time, was a kiss that was cold and calculating, and filled with ulterior motives that must have made Jesus’ heart fill with sorrow, because he knew full well, of his demise to come, and he must have felt its burden weigh upon his mind heavily; just at the moment as Judas’ lips were leaving his cheek.

Yes, the most famous kiss in the world, wasn’t even between a man and a woman, it was between two men, and no, it wasn’t gay! but it was a kiss nonetheless; and it was the kiss that most everyone has heard about, and has some opinion or another about it. Some say a kiss is just a kiss, but in this case, it was more than that, it was “The” pivotal kiss, that led to betrayal, crucifixion, and eventually, redemption; of which we can all be thankful for. For without redemption, we would not have a way of forgiveness from sins.

Kiss someone you love today, and really mean it, for it may be the last kiss you share, or tell someone you love them, and really mean it from the heart, for pivotal and life changing moments, can happen at a moment’s notice, without you even recognizing it.

I Am So Afraid

My greatest fear is that my life will be unfulfilled. My daughters biggest fear is that an evil person might take or hurt one of her three young children. Recently, I met a woman whose biggest fear is cancer. My elderly neighbors biggest fear is dieing alone. What is your biggest fear? Does fear seem to control you?

Have you ever felt fear because you knew that the problem you were facing took away all of your control? A fear that drove you to your knees begging God to protect you from the dread of pain. A fear that consumed your every wakening thought and made you so afraid that you couldn’t eat. All you could do was cry and wonder why is this happening to me?

Many people in life today feel fear when they are met with the reality of a life threatening disease, natural disaster, or maybe even with the uncertainty of a relationship where you were in love, but the other person was in it for the wrong reasons. Everyone has experienced these feelings of total helplessness, life situations that make you feel that you are not in control of the outcome that is affecting your life.

Today we live where the News on television is constantly blaring images of horrible things happening all over the world. Forcing us, during commercial breaks, to see the evil that people perpetrate on each other through wars, murders and civil disputes. Whether we like it or not we will be witnesses to these evil crimes through the media we invite into our homes everyday.

We see the news of soaring gas prices in our newspapers and on our computers. We see constant headlines outlining the economic crunches combined with job loss and telling us that our world has so many problems that almost none of them can be solved. The constant bombardment of information can take the heart of a strong man and make him afraid.

How could you not be afraid when disasters, diseases, and famines are constantly reminding us of how uncertain life can be? If this is not enough, then we are reminded through made up television programs if God loves people then why is there so many bad things happening to them in the first place. So now our faith has been undermined and we feel deserted in an evil world with no hope at all.

Recently I was contacted by a woman who was in the throws of uncontrollable fear. She was afraid that either she or a member of her immediate family was going to be consumed by cancer. I asked why she felt this way and she began to tell me all about the people she knew who had either died or survived cancer. She was so much in a state of fear that she stated that she just didn’t know how she could believe in God when there seemed to be an epidemic of cancer spreading everywhere.

Understanding the every day dilemmas found in the world and the anxiety brought on by her extreme emotions, I explained to her why she was so afraid. Many people do not understand that we live in a world that demands that we either believe in God or we will fall prey to the evil workings of Satan. We live in a learning world. A world where we must learn the difference between right and wrong.

Gaining wisdom makes us look directly into the face of evil and determine for ourselves why it is bad. The only way we can do this is by being presented with opposites. These opposites are like the difference between peace and war, good health and disease, love and hate, and of course truth and deception. Every one of these make us see why our world is evil.

When Adam and Eve sinned they released Satan into the world. From that moment Satan became god over man. This is the reason why Cain killed Abel, why a flood destroyed the earth except for Noah, why God chose Israel to suffer as slaves in order to teach people how to defend themselves from the devil.

Satan has the power to enter our minds and tempt us to sin. Sin is doing anything that leads us away from the perfect plan of God. Sin is evil because it demands that we don’t care about anyone except ourselves. God is opposite from sin. God is love and He helps people. Jesus came to be the Savior of the world. He rescues people from Satan when we place our trust in Him.

If we don’t place our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior then we are immediately put in danger of totally being destroyed by Satan. If we are a Christian, but we don’t practice our faith, then we are in danger of whatever Satan wants to throw at us because we are not defending ourselves from his snares. If we are a Christian and we practice our faith then we will be tested by what we face in the world in order for us to learn the difference between right and wrong.

In the Old Testament God explains just what will happen if you don’t practice your faith. This is the reality of our world today. This is the reason why people are depressed, afraid and have given up on life. When you don’t understand what you are fighting against then you are destined to fail.

Deuteronomy 28: 65-67, “You will find no peace anywhere, no place to call your own; the Lord will overwhelm you with anxiety, hopelessness, and despair. Your life will always be in danger. Day and night you will be filled with terror, and you will live in constant fear of death. Your hearts will pound with fear at everything you see. Every morning you will wish for evening; every evening you will wish for morning.”

In this passage the Lord refers to Satan’s ability to hurt people when they don’t understand that they are in a great game of life that demands that you either activate your faith in the saving power of Jesus or you fail! Satan makes you afraid of job loss, high food and gas prices, cancer, crime, and becoming a victim to anything that can destroy your life.

When Jesus Christ came He taught His disciples a simple prayer of faith, “The Lord’s Prayer’. Jesus covered everything that a person would ever come up against in this revolutionary prayer.

Matthew 6:9b-13, “Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honored; may your Kingdom come; may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need. Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us. Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One.”

When God is honored in our world then love and service reigns in people’s lives. Praying for God’s will is praying for God to defeat Satan and the evil he perpetrates against people. When we pray for our daily needs then we are believing and trusting God to give us what we need. This does not mean He is going to make us rich, it means that we can count on God to give us just what we need at the time we need it. As Christian’s our desire is for all men to come to the knowledge of God, this is the reason we pray for those who have done us wrong. When we pray for protection from Satan we are acknowledging that he tempts people and he is the adversary of all men.

Cancer and the bad things that happen to people can truly be a scary thing to see, but when we follow Jesus Christ, He gives us the strength to overcome fear. When you follow Christ your fear makes you become an intercessor for those who are going through hard things in the world.

Fear leads a Christian to take action by fighting Satan through service to those who are in need. Christians show unconditional love by helping others who are in need. If it’s sickness then they pray and help with home care, food or taking care of children. If it is job loss, devastation as a result of a storm, fire, war or even famine; Christians give money, support and refuge.

Romans 12: 9-12, “Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. Love one another warmly as Christian brothers, and be eager to show respect for one another. Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times.”

“I am so afraid” is not in the vocabulary of a Christian who is playing their game of life to win. Fear is a weapon of Satan that is debilitating. Satan wants us to give up our faith in God by making us see how impossible life is when we look at the full picture of evil that is present in the world. God tells us to hate evil and to be patient. Jesus tells us to love one another warmly. Satan wants us to give up and stop praying for help.
